There are some great reasons to drum, here are just a few: Drumming is a great workout for your brain and can actually make you smarter. Drumming induces deep relaxation and a reversal in the quanity of blood stress hormones. Drumming creates a sense of connectedness. Drumming releases negative feelings and provides a way to access a higher power.
Meet your drumming guide:
Born Osei Yaw Akoto in Kumasi, Ghana and known in Spiritual circles as Hari Chakra Das, Osei was Inspired by Guy Warren, affectionately known to Ghanaians as Kofi Ghanaba who himself was among the earliest African musicians to exert an influence on world music. Kofi Ghanaba would invite Osei over to watch him drum and this proximity eventually lead Osei to a love of the djembe, a love affair that which has lasted for over thirty years.
In the Ghanaian tradition and in fact most African traditions, the drum is used as a ceremonial instrument especially as a way to glorify an exalted personality, like the “Ashanta Hene”, or the King of the Ashanti’s. The drum is not played for playing sake it is a ‘medium’. When you absorb yourself in the rhythm of the drum your soul speaks with the beat and you can actually start to get a sense of your spiritual identity.
Self-taught in the Kpallogo rhythm a style popular among the Ga and Ewe tribes of West Africa, Osei incorporates the djembe into his spiritual lifestyle using his drumming as a mode of devotional service, taking the action of drumming from the material to the sublime to the transcendental. This is particularly felt in kirtan where one can experience the transformation brought about by the powerful sound vibration of a drum “talking in tongues”.
All Three Leaf events are by self-guided donation, because we believe the quality of a person's life should not depend on the size of their bank balance. Spread the word, bring a friend and please register.
