All Souls Matter

As a cis-gender female, black-bodied practicing spiritual yogi I feel these current times has given me an opportunity to present a unique perspective at the intersectionality of gender, race and spirituality an opportunity of deep thought and reflection.

In Vedic wisdom, for something to be considered “Sat” or truth, it has to be consistent in three phases of time: past. present and future. Otherwise it is “Asat” or illusion/ unreal. So, what is truth? What were you 500 years ago? Did you exist in the form you have now? Will you have this same form 500 years from now? If the answer to either of those questions is NO, then you are dealing with an illusion. It seems real but it is not actually true because it is not permanent.

In the Bhagavad-Gita As It Is, Sri Krishna the Supreme Lord states that “Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be. -Bg 2:11

He is not talking about the body (that is withering as we speak), but the soul within the body. If after a lifetime of calling yourself a religionist if you haven’t grasped or realized the ABC of spiritual life which is: ”Aham Brahmasmi”-I am spirit, I am NOT this body, you missed the starting gun and are simply wasting your time, you have built your house on sand. In the letters of Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians the same sentiment is clearly stated; “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal”. -II Corinthians 4:18

The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision, a learned and gentle brahmana (priest), a cow, an elephant, a dog, and an outcaste. -Bg 5:18

When we focus on the external covering, we miss, understanding the living entity as so much more and neglect the potential that that soul carries.

On the bodily platform white supremacy and the privilege that comes with it is factual and destructive. Black lives do matter and if you as a person of any hue have not experienced your skin colour contributing to the difficulties in your life, if you are still struggling with those two facts you need to take the time to educated yourself about the history of the black struggle in this country and the daily plight of people of colour. To understand is the least that you can do as a sign of solidarity and humanity. We cannot manipulate our way out of the miseries of the material world it is hot wired to cause us pain. Whether it is black rights, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, there will always be a case worth fighting for, because this human body comes with 4 defects: 1) the tendency to cheat, 2) the tendency to make mistakes, 3) it is easily illusioned and 4) it has imperfect senses which impacts our ability to gather accurate data.

In ignorance, our relationship with each other and with every other living entity can only be that of exploitation. In this “Age of Kali”, the age of “quarrel and hypocrisy” how hypocritical is it to say “All Lives Matter” in one breath and then turn around to exploit animals and aquatics for food and clothing, the earth for resources, and other people that work in jobs with wages so low it is impossible to support themselves or their families, or slave away in sweat shops and factories here and overseas so that we can maintain a standard of living and convenience that we do not question.

Einstein has been credited with saying that you cannot solve a problem at the same level of consciousness that it was created. It is time to raise our consciousness and understand how misidentifying ourselves as entities of matter leaves us frustrated, angry and dissatisfied at every turn. Only by realizing, identifying, then acting on our true anti-material nature, can we find mental clarity, satisfaction, and a form of peace in this world.
